The ballad of Morgan Jones is not over yet.

AMC has renewed Fear the Walking Dead for a seventh season. The news comes as the flagship Walking Dead spinoff is currently on hiatus in the middle of season six, having wrapped one episode earlier than originally intended.

"It was heartbreaking not to be able to carry it through to 608, just because that is an astounding episode," executive producer Scott M. Gimple recently told The Hollywood Reporter about the planned midseason six finale. "It's such a big episode in the history of the series. It'll make an amazing start. [The series is back in production.] We've been working for many weeks now, if not months. We're cranking away on Fear the Walking Dead. We have the rest of season six to finish up while we are working on season seven."

What could the future of Fear the Walking Dead look like? At the moment, the series centers on the split group of survivors working with and against the morally dubious Virginia (Colby Minifie) in equal measure. For his part, Lennie James' Morgan is once again back in kill-or-be-killed mode, putting all of his resources into getting his friends back together to form a united front against Virginia. Through the first seven episodes of season six, main characters such as John Dorie (Garret Dillahunt), June (Jenna Elfman), Alicia (Alycia Debnam-Carey) and Strand (Colman Domingo) remain alive, if not all of them well. Whether they stay that way heading into season seven … that's another matter entirely.

A return date for season six has not yet been set. For now, the next dose of The Walking Dead comes in the form of an upcoming Talking Dead holiday-themed special, streaming December 13 on AMC+. Next, the flagship Walking Dead will bow the first of six new episodes on February 28, extending into an early April run.

Beyond that series and Fear, the greater Walking Dead universe currently includes spinoff series The Walking Dead: World Beyond, teed up for a second and final season; Tales of the Walking Dead, a planned anthology series; an untitled spinoff focusing on Norman Reedus and Melissa McBride's Daryl and Carol; and the Andrew Lincoln-starring Rick Grimes series of films.
