'Flip or Flop' Is Renewed — and More Viewers Are Watching After Its Stars' Divorce

Viewership is up 18 percent from the previous season, when Christina and Tarek El Moussa were still a couple.

Flip or Flop was quite nearly derailed by its stars' very public split, but the series' return with now-separated Christina and Tarek El Moussa has been a ratings win for HGTV — and the network is already committing to another 15 episodes.

The Discovery-owned network, which just purchased the Brady Bunch house for a yet-to-be-announced project, has renewed the original Flip or Flop for an eighth season. This comes as viewership has risen 18 percent during the current run, with HGTV citing a gross 15.2 million viewers watching the show across its many telecasts.

This seventh season of Flip or Flop very nearly didn't happen. The central duo, who were flipping foreclosed Southern California homes before they got their TV vehicle, separated in 2016. With the show on a break, the network responded with five spinoffs — each following different house-flippers in different cities. Ultimately, the El Moussas reunited to once again work together after their divorce. The May 31 return, the first new episode to air in almost a full year, netted a strong 2 million viewers and a 0.5 rating among women 18-49. (Christina El Moussa got her own spinoff in June.)

“HGTV fans have followed Tarek and Christina through scores of house flips and supported their personal journey for years,” said Allison Page, president HGTV and Food Network. “We’re eager to see how they continue to run their flipping business, co-parent their children and start new chapters in their professional and personal lives.”

The network is also in talks with Tarek El Moussa for his own solo vehicle, which comes as little surprise given HGTV’s fondness for leaning into its major talent. Though it's currently without any new projects from the stars of former flagship Fixer Upper, the network locked the popular Property Brothers into a new deal earlier in 2018. Across multiple series, Drew and Jonathan Scott give the network 52 weeks’ worth of premiere content a year.

Flip or Flop’s current season is airing Thursday nights. The new season, already in production, is expected to bow in Spring 2019.
