'For Life' Replaces 'Stumptown' as ABC Dramas Get Premiere Dates
ABC has solidified the last remaining piece of its fall schedule.
The Disney-owned broadcaster on Thursday announced premiere dates for its scripted dramas, with the returns of shows including Grey's Anatomy set for a staggering rollout in November.
The schedule keeps with what ABC Entertainment president Karey Burke revealed in June with one notable change: For Life will now take over the Wednesday 10 p.m. slot previously earmarked for Stumptown. The Cobie Smulders-led drama had its renewal reversed Wednesday because the series was not going to be able to make its planned fall launch. Production had yet to begin in L.A., and sources note that the creative reboot for season two didn't come in strong enough. With a sizable price tag on the show (despite being owned in-house), ABC opted to reverse the renewal and cancel the show.
ABC's dramas will begin rolling out Nov. 2 with The Good Doctor. The network's Shondaland dramas, Grey's Anatomy and spinoff Station 19, will return 10 days later with the former slotted for a two-hour premiere. A Million Little Things will join the Thursday schedule the following week.
The network's lone new fall series — David E. Kelley drama Big Sky, starring Katheryn Winnick and Kylie Bunbury — bows Nov. 17.
Scripted dramas are the last piece of ABC's schedule. As Burke told THR in June, she planned to have a "cascading" schedule as the network plotted a return to business as usual following the unprecedented production shutdown brought on by the novel coronavirus pandemic. ABC first announced the returns of its unscripted fare, including Dancing With the Stars (which came back this week), followed by its comedy lineup. Dramas are considered the hardest shows to resume production with new safety protocols in place.
