FX Sets Cast for Comedy Pilot From 'Weeds' EP
FX has set the cast for its romantic comedy pilot from Weeds executive producer Stephen Falk.
After Earth's Chris Geere and The Newsroom's Aya Cash will star in the comedy about what happens when two self-destructive people fall in love, FX announced Thursday. Additionally, Pitch Perfect's Kether Donohue and Desmin Borges (Mr. Popper's Penguins) have booked co-starring roles in the half-hour pilot.
Geere will play Jimmy, a self-absorbed, outspoken and insensitive writer living in L.A. who is unsettled when he finds he has feelings for Gretchen (Cash), a one-night stand. Gretchen is described as a cynical and self-destructive woman who grew up believing she was perfect but who now realizes that things haven't worked out as she'd hoped, considering she's broke, approaching 30 and works as a publicist for an immature hip-hop group who make her life miserable. She also finds herself terrified whens he begins to have feelings for another person.
Donohue will play Gretchen's best friend, Lindsay. She's the beta to Gretchen's alpha and is trying to be a proper married adult despite her friend's desire to see her revert back to her party-girl ways. Borges will play Edgar, Jimmy's childhood friend/roommate who is a war veteran suffering from PTSD and mild battlefield-induced psychosis.
Falk created and penned the pilot, which hails from FX Productions and will be directed by Jordan Vogt-Roberts (Kings of Summer). Falk was a co-EP and writer on the Emmy-nominated Showtime pot-dealing comedy Weeds, which ended its run in September. His credits also include reteaming with Weeds creator Jenji Kohan on Netflix's latest original series, Orange Is the New Black, and he created NBC's short-lived Dane Cook comedy Next Caller, which was canceled before it aired.
Geere is repped by Creative Partners Group; Cash and Vogt-Roberts are with UTA; Donohue is with APA; and Borges is with Stewart Talent.
