'Game of Thrones' Podcast: One Last Look at Season 4

THR's weekly 'Thrones' rewatch podcast arrives at the season four finale, "The Children."

Which Game of Thrones season is the best? You could argue this question with fellow fans until you're blue in the face — or purple, as was the case with a certain king. More often than not, the debate comes down to two years in Thrones history: season three and season four, which mostly deals with adapting the third novel in George R.R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire series, A Storm of Swords.

Season three contains arguably the most famous scene in not only Game of Thrones, but in recent television history as well: the Red Wedding. Season four, meanwhile, contains numerous moments that rival the deaths of Robb and Catelyn Stark, both in terms of memorability and shock value. The Red Viper's head-crushing demise comes to mind, as does the aforementioned departure of the wicked Joffrey Baratheon

The season four finale, titled "The Children," adds a few more iconic Thrones moments for good measure, including:

• Tyrion Lannister killing his own father, Tywin, signaling the end of one of Thrones' most complicated antagonists;

• The Hound and Brienne of Tarth's brutal brawl, among the single most intense sequences in all of Thrones;

• Stannis Baratheon's forces finally doing something for the first time since "Blackwater," crushing Mance Rayder and the Wildling army;

• Bran Stark finally reaching the Three-Eyed Raven, along with the promise that he will some day "fly";

• and Arya Stark finally fleeing Westeros, sailing off toward a new adventure in Braavos.

It's easier to agree that the combined seasons three and four comprise the most exciting and turbulent time in Game of Thrones, certainly with the Dorne-filled season five off in the horizon. Whether one surpasses the other in terms of sheer quality? Again, debate away — just as we do in this week's episode of "Winter Was Here," the weekly Game of Thrones rewatch podcast collaboration between The Hollywood Reporter and Post Show Recaps.
