'Game of Thrones' Season Five Blu-ray Details Stannis Baratheon's Death (Exclusive Video)
Though his fate was somewhat ambiguous in the moment, there's no longer any question about it: Stannis Baratheon (Stephen Dillane) is dead.
The middle Baratheon brother, his heart so set on the Iron Throne that he burned his entire family to the ground both literally and figuratively, died in the season five finale at the hands of Brienne of Tarth (Gwendoline Christie) shortly after losing an all-or-nothing battle against House Bolton outside of Winterfell.
It was a shocking moment for a wide range of reasons, not the least of which is Stannis' continued survival in the A Song of Ice and Fire books on which Thrones is based, at least to this point — but also shocking because it was a relatively quiet affair, after seasons of buildup.
"The glorious thing about Brienne's last scene of the season is that what she puts at stake unwittingly — the rescue of Sansa — is only matched by the anticlimax of killing this man," Christie says in a behind-the-scenes video from the Game of Thrones season five Blu-ray, exclusive featured on THR.com.
Showrunner David Benioff adds: "[Brienne] was expecting this monster, and what she finds is Stannis. We had written a longer moment where Stannis has more last words and finally we decided that didn't feel like Stannis."
Watch the video below for a closer look at Stannis' death, and see even more special features when the Game of Thrones season five Blu-ray arrives on March 15.
