HBO Responds to Coffee Cup "Mistake" in 'Game of Thrones' Episode
Something did not belong in Sunday's episode of Game of Thrones.
Savvy viewers who tuned in to the fourth episode of the HBO fantasy saga's final season, "The Last of the Starks," were distracted when they spotted what appeared to be an out-of-place Starbucks coffee cup in a scene taking place in Winterfell, the home of House Stark.
Amid a tense glance between Jon Snow (Kit Harington) and Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke), viewers paused to capture the coffee cup sitting on the table between them. The moment came during the beginning of the extended hour, when the survivors from the combined houses of Westeros had gathered for a night of drinking — out of steel mugs and animal horns, not branded coffee cups — to celebrate their victorious (but still deadly) battle against the Night King and his Army of the Dead.
Starbucks later responded with a tweet. "TBH we're surprised she didn't order a Dragon Drink," read the post from the coffee chain's official handle.
In response to "inquiries from those who saw a craft services coffee cup in Sunday night's episode," HBO said in a statement on Monday, "The latte that appeared in the episode was a mistake. Daenerys had ordered an herbal tea."
By Tuesday, the errant cup was removed from all platform re-airs.
