Greg Berlanti is continuing his relationship with Supergirl veteran scribe Derek Simon.

The CW is developing The Disasters, a space drama written by Simon and exec produced by Berlanti Productions.

Based on the book by M.K. England, the potential series is set in a near-future when humans have colonized space to save Earth from climate crisis. The Disasters follows a group of washouts from Earth's prestigious military academy who are framed for treason and forced to go on the run to the Colonies to clear their names.

Simon will pen the script and exec produce alongside frequent Berlanti collaborator Lee Toland Krieger (You, Superman and Lois), with the latter set to direct should the script move to pilot. Berlanti and his company partner Sarah Schechter and head of television David Madden will exec produce for Berlanti Productions. 5 More Minutes Productions' John Sacchi and Matt Groesch are also involved.

Simon started his entertainment career as an intern for the Howard Stern Show while he was attending film school at NYU. He is a former writer's assistant for The Americans and worked with Berlanti on USA Network's Graceland before joining Supergirl as a writer in season one, rising through the ranks to become a co-exec producer. The CW superhero drama will end in 2021 after six seasons.

Simon is repped by Tantillo Entertainment and Morris Yorn.
