'Grey's Anatomy' Alums Set Up Legal Thriller at CBS
Grey's Anatomy alums Tony Phelan and Joan Rater have made their first development sale, and it's a big one.
CBS has handed out a hefty put-pilot commitment to an untitled romantic legal thriller from the writing duo and real-life couple, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.

The untitled drama centers on a smart and passionate defense attorney who finds herself powerfully attracted to her client, a man accused of a decades-old murder. As she struggles to defend him, she finds herself and her prestigious firm caught in the middle of a high-profile case that could either make her reputation or destroy her career.
Phelan and Rater will pen the script and executive produce the CBS Television Studios drama alongside Timberman-Beverly Productions' Sarah Timberman and Carl Beverly. (Timberman and Beverly are also based at CBSTVS.)
This marks the couple's first sale under their overall deal with CBSTVS. Under the pact, Phelan and Rater currently serve as consulting producers on CBS' Tea Leoni drama Madam Secretary. Before jumping to CBSTVS, the duo were with ABC Studios and served as exec producers on Grey's Anatomy, where they oversaw the writers' room (and where Phelan directed multiple episodes). They joined the Shonda Rhimes medical drama at the start of season two and departed after season 10 ended in May. Repped by UTA and attorney David Fox, Phelan and Rater's credits including co-producing NBC's Law & Order: Trial By Jury.
Beverly and Timberman, who also exec produce CBS' The Odd Couple (set for midseason), VH1's Hindsight, CBS' Elementary, Showtime's Masters of Sex and FX's Justified, are with CAA.
