'Grey's Anatomy's' Caterina Scorsone Goes Inside Amelia's Big Wedding Decision
[Warning: This story contains spoilers from the May 19 season 12 finale of ABC's Grey's Anatomy.]
There wasn't a shooting or a plane crash, but Thursday's Grey's Anatomy season 12 finale had just enough drama to make Amelia (Caterina Scorsone) and Owen's (Kevin McKidd) wedding day a memorable one.
While Amelia and Owen did indeed make their union official in the season finale, the path to get there wound up being an incredibly enlightening (and game-changing) one for the neurosurgeon.
After a fierce argument with her mother, Amelia is devastated that nobody from her family — including her biological sisters Liz, Nancy and the yet-to-be introduced Kathleen — will be attending her wedding to Owen. Barely keeping it together, Amelia also overhears "twisted sister" Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) struggling with the fact that her sister-in-law is about to marry best friend Cristina's (Sandra Oh) ex-husband. It ultimately props Amelia to bolt — with Meredith and Maggie, who are both there to support Amelia.
To hear star Scorsone tell it, Amelia's decision to ultimately go through with the wedding had to come from within and marked a real turning point for the character who has already faced so much tragedy in her life.
"Amelia has a lot more going for her than she realizes; she has a lot more internal resources than she realizes," Scorsone tells THR. "What she's looking for is permission to be happy and that is a permission that is not going to come. She's looking to get that from all of the people who are no longer in her life: Derek, her dad and people who aren't alive to give her that permission — so she seeks a lot of it from Meredith. That fraught relationship has become a surrogate for so many of the meaningful people in her life. Meredith and the kids are her last connection to Derek and she really wants Meredith's approval and permission to be happy. She's so desperate to receive love from Meredith and it's a hard battle."
And that's what actually shifts for Amelia in the season finale that helps transform the thrice-engaged character into someone ready to tie the knot and become her own person.
"In the end, Meredith and Amelia talk and it's not that Meredith gives her the approval she had been looking for —she throws it back to Amelia: 'Why are you looking to me? Why do you think I can tell you what to do? Look to yourself.' That is the permission she needs. She needs permission to go inside and see who she is and what she wants. She gets permission to listen to herself. She knows she loves Owen and this is what she wants. She gets permission to stop looking for external approval and get what she needs from herself."
