'Grey's Anatomy': What's at the Root of Jackson and April's Marital Woes?

Can April (Sarah Drew) and Jackson (Jesse Williams) make it work on ABC's Grey's Anatomy?

If you ask Jackson, the answer — for a long time — has been no, as the doc has been looking to get his estranged wife, April, to sign divorce papers. However, April has been fighting desperately for her husband after she abruptly left for the Army following the death of their newborn son, Samuel.

After being on the back burner for much of the season, Thursday's Grey's Anatomy will dedicate nearly the entire episode to exploring the couple — including resolving the status of their marriage.

"I think they'd both have to let go of some pretty big things," Drew tells THR about what it would take to get April and Jackson back together on a positive path. "Jackson would need to heal from the death of Samuel in some way. April would need to own her part in his pain in that and do so in a way that's deep and not just an 'I'm sorry' kind of way. Something big needs to happen to remind them what's important."

The hour, titled "Unbreak My Heart," will flash back 12 years to when April and Jackson first met at Mercy West and fill in the gaps for their relationship, as well as the past year.

"I believe there's always hope for them," Drew stresses. "As is true in relationships and life and marriages and life, you have deep pits of despair and darkness and wonderful hope and refreshment and reconciliation and redemption. And then there are moments that don't go as well. We get to take a really fun journey with the two of them through all twists and turns in this one episode. Regardless of how the episode ends — where we discover their status at the present time. But you never know what will happen down the road. You never know what's going to happen, especially in Shondaland. Nothing is ever final."

While the episode will offer a definitive answer to the fate of their marriage, Drew says it's not all doom and gloom.

"There are some really fun moments that we get to see from their road-trip elopement," Drew says. "Those are some of my favorite moments in the episode. They will be surprised to see how April and Jackson's differences affected where they wind up at the beginning of the episode."

Grey's Anatomy airs Thursdays at 8 p.m. on ABC. Stay tuned to THR's The Live Feed after the episode for more from Drew.
