'Hairspray Live' Rounds Out Cast With Disney Channel Stars
Hairspray Live is looking to the Disney Channel for its latest castings.
Liv and Maddie alum Dove Cameron and Teen Beach Movie star Garrett Clayton have joined NBC's upcoming musical production, it was announced Monday.
Based on the Broadway musical, Hairspray Live takes place in 1962 Baltimore. Teenager Tracy Turnblad’s dream is to dance on The Corny Collins Show, a local TV program, so when she wins a role on the show, she becomes a celebrity overnight and meets a colorful array of characters, including the resident dreamboat, Link; the ambitious mean girl, Amber; and an African-American boy, Seaweed, in detention. Tracy soon begins on a quest to integrate the dance show.
Cameron will play Amber Von Tussle, while Clayton will portray Link Larkin. Vitamin C played Amber in the 1988 film, with Brittany Snow picking up the torch in the 2007 movie. Link was played by Michael St. Gerard and most recently Zac Efron. The announcement comes a day ahead of NBC's presentation at the Television Critics Association's summer press tour.
The duo join a cast that includes Harvey Fierstein, Jennifer Hudson, Ariana Grande, Kristin Chenoweth, Martin Short and Derek Hough.
Fierstein also is writing the teleplay for the production, which once again hails from The Sound of Music, Peter Pan and The Wiz executive producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron. The Wiz Live! director Kenny Leon, live television director Alex Rudzinski and choreographer Jerry Mitchell (Kinky Boots) round out the team.
Hairspray Live is set to air Wednesday, Dec. 7, at 8 p.m. ET (tape-delayed PT) and marks the first time the live telecast will be filmed in Los Angeles.
