Hulu is reteaming with producers of its series Casual to develop a drama with gambling at its center.

After a long dealmaking process, the streamer has snagged rights to author Sean Michaels' novel The Wagers. Casual creator Zander Lehmann will adapt the book and executive produce alongside Helen Estabrook, also a veteran of Casual. Michaels will be a consulting producer on the project, which hails from ABC Signature.

The Wagers centers on Theo Potiris, who's grieving the loss of his mother when he meets two sisters who will change the course of his life: one a gambler with enough data to swing betting odds, and one who trades in luck, an actual substance that she and her team are slowly stealing from the luck-rich families around the world.

Lehmann created and executive produced Casual, which ran for four seasons on Hulu from 2015-18. He also worked on The Shannara Chronicles. Estabrook, meanwhile, also exec produced HBO's Mrs. Fletcher and was a producer of Whiplash.

Michaels is repped by UTA and Meredith Kaffel Simonoff at DeFiore and Company.

The Wagers joins a roster of upcoming and in the works projects at Hulu that includes The Girl From Plainville starring The Great's Elle Fanning; limited series Dopesick; Rodham, based on Curtis Sittenfeld's alt-history novel about Hillary Clinton; and Sally Rooney's Conversation With Friends, among others.
