Humans is gearing up for season three.

AMC and Channel 4 have renewed the sci-fi series, The Hollywood Reporter has learned. The eight-episode third season will bow in 2018.

Set in a parallel present, Humans examines what happens when the line between human and machine becomes blurred. The renewal comes a week after the season two finale, featuring a shocking cliffhanger, aired stateside. (The drama last aired in the U.K. in December 2016.)

THR chief TV critic Tim Goodman praised the sophomore run of the series, saying it "continues to expand and redefine the genre in dramatically creative and human ways."

“We’re thrilled to be continuing this story! The Humans audience will know that the end of season 2 changed everything,” showrunners Sam Vincent and Jonathan Brackley said. “We can’t wait to bring this new world to life – along with the best cast in TV, our amazing partners at Kudos and two fantastically supportive broadcasters in Channel 4 and AMC."

Based on the Swedish format Real Humans, Vincent and Brackley adapted the series for AMC and Channel 4. The duo exec produce with original series creator Lars Lundstrom and Henrik Widman for Matador Films, Derek Wax and Emma Kingsman-Lloyd for Kudos, with Vicki Delow attached as a producer. Endemol Shine International handles international distribution for the series.

Added Channel 4’s head of drama Beth Willis: “I can't wait to see what the extraordinarily talented Sam and Jon do next with this show – no doubt it will be as insightful, surprising and addictive as ever. It's a privilege to work with them, Kudos, AMC and our superb cast once again.”

Channel 4 originally partnered with Xbox Entertainment Studios to develop Humans in 2014. AMC stepped in after Xbox Studios was shuttered by Microsoft.

Humans provides a thrilling look at the evolution of technology and its effect on society,” said AMC and SundanceTV original programming and development president Joel Stillerman. “The critical response to season two celebrates the creative vision, dynamic storytelling and compelling portrayals shared by the writers, producers and actors. We are pleased to continue our collaboration with Channel 4 and Kudos and look forward to season three.”

For AMC, Humans comes as the cabler prepares to close the book on two original series: Revolutionary War drama Turn and the ‘80s tech drama Halt and Catch Fire. The network’s original series slate also includes continued performer The Walking Dead, spin-offs Better Call Saul and Fear the Walking Dead, Into the Badlands and Preacher.
