Immigration Comedy From Greg Garcia in the Works at CBS
CBS is looking to tackle a very timely topic.
The network is developing a comedy from Greg Garcia about immigration, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.
Tentatively titled Welcome to Maine, the multicamera effort centers on a ninth-generation Maine family and a recent immigrant and his daughter who all must learn to embrace change when they share the same workplace in a small rural town.
Austen Earl (The Carmichael Show) will write the half-hour and executive produce with Garcia and Alix Jaffe for CBS TV Studios. The project reunites Earl with Garcia, whom he worked for on The Millers. It also brings him back to CBS, where he most recently served as a co-executive producer on The Great Indoors.
News of the project comes hours after Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced the Trump administration's decision to "wind down" the DACA program put in place by his successor, Barack Obama. The program protects hundreds of thousands of young immigrants brought into the country illegally as minors.
Former president Obama called the decision "cruel" and "self-defeating" in a lengthy Facebook post, with many others in Hollywood weighing in Tuesday as well.
Several protests have already broken out in Washington and Denver, with others expected to take place in Southern California and across the country in the coming days.
