HBO has ordered a limited series called The Son, starring and executive produced by Jake Gyllenhaal.

The drama, based on a novel by Jo Nesbo, also counts director Denis Villeneuve and Westworld creators Lisa Joy and Jonathan Nolan among its executive producers. Lenore Zion (Billions, Netflix's Brand New Cherry Flavor) is writing and will serve as showrunner.

"Jonah and Lisa are a formidable creative force and we are excited to collaborate with them again, alongside the brilliant Lenore, to adapt Jo Nesbo’s novel," said HBO Programming executive vp Francesca Orsi. "Denis is a master at weaving visually exquisite and unique narratives, Jake is a gifted actor and producer whose work often traverses provocative and compelling terrain, and of course, he and Denis have collaborated brilliantly in the past. We are beyond excited to see how this powerhouse team tackles this exceptional work."

The Son is described as a story of vengeance set in Oslo, where there's a brutal hierarchy of corruption. Gyllenhaal and Villeneuve, who worked together on 2013's Prisoners and Enemy, have been circling the project for several years, having originally developed it as a feature film. The novel has sold millions of copies worldwide.

Gyllenhaal and Riva Marker will executive produce via their Nine Stories Productions. Villeneuve and Zion also exec produce along with Kilter Films' Joy, Nolan and Athena Wickham; Bold Films’ David Litvak, Gary Michael Walters, Michel Litvak and Svetlana Metkina; Nesbo; and Niclas Salomonsson. Nine Stories, Kilter Films and Bold Films produce in association with Warner Bros. TV.

Gyllenhaal is repped by WME and Goodman Genow. Villeneuve is repped by CAA and the Claude Girard Agency. Nesbo is repped by The Salomonsson Agency, WME and Keith Fleer. Zion is repped by attorney Lev Ginsberg.
