He unveiled the news during his Schieffer Symposium on the News at Texas Christian University in Fort Worth. Pauley, who spent years at NBC, was on hand for the announcement and joked about how excited she was about joining the network.

"I can’t tell you -- my heart is doing strange things. Is there a doctor in the house? Actually, there are all kinds of doctors in the house and on stage, but thank you. My pulse is absolutely racing at that news -- CBS."

Pauley co-hosted NBC's Today from 1976-1989, and Dateline from 1992-2003. She began her news anchor career in 1972 at a CBS affiliate in Indianapolis.
