Jason Ritter is returning to broadcast.

The Parenthood alum has been tapped to star in ABC drama pilot The Gospel of Kevin, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.

The drama is described as a light one hour about Kevin, a down-on-his-luck man who is tasked by God with a mission to save the world. Ritter will play Kevin Flynn, a cluelessly self-serving jerk on a dangerous path to despair. After a failed suicide attempt, he's going home to stay with his widowed twin sister and niece for a time, only to be met with a crisis that presents itself very real in the person Yvette, a warrior for God, whose job is to guide Kevin back to the road of righteousness, and make him understand his mission in this life.

Agent Carter duo Michele Fazekas and Tara Butters will pen the script and exec produce the ABC Studios drama. Robert Atwood has also signed on as a producer, while Paul McGuigan (Designated Survivor, The Family) will direct the pilot.

For Ritter, Kevin marks a return to broadcast following roles in NBC's Parenthood as well as The Event and Joan of Arcadia. His TV credits also include Fox's Us and Them, which was canceled before its premiere; Netflix's Gilmore Girls revival, Comedy Central's Drunk History and Another Period, Amazon's Goliath and HBO's Girls. On the feature side, he recently starred in Bitch, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival. He's repped by ICM Partners and the Burstein Co.
