Netflix Sets Cast for Mark Millar Superhero Drama 'Jupiter's Legacy'
Netflix's Mark Millar superhero drama Jupiter's Legacy has found its stars.
The cast will be led by Transformers star Josh Duhamel, The Crown's Ben Daniels, Iron Man's Leslie Bibb, Sacred Lies' Elena Kampouris and Doctors' Andrew Horton. Jupiter's Legacy centers on the world's first generation of superheroes, who gained their powers in the 1930s. The series is set in the present day and follows the elder statesmen of the superhero world, as well as their children.
Duhamel will play Sheldon Sampson, also known as The Utopian, who is the leader of the superhero group The Union. He's a man who no longer understands the world or his family.
Daniels is playing Sheldon's brilliant older brother Walter Sampson, also known as Brain-Wave, while Bibb is playing Grace Sampson, the extremely powerful hero Lady Liberty and wife of Sheldon.
Kampouris will play Chloe Sampson, the daughter of Sheldon and Grace. She has abandoned the values of her parents and pursued a path that threatens the things they've fought for. The family also includes Brandon Sampson (Horton), the son of Sheldon and Grace and a hero training to be the new Utopian and lead The Union.
Other castmembers include Timeless' Mike Wade, who will play the hero Fizt Small/The Flare, whose career as a superhero was ended by a car accident, but who continues to hold the team together. Star Wars: The Clone Wars' Matt Lanter is playing George Hutchence/Skyfox — a man who was once Sheldon's best friend before turning on The Union and becoming a notorious supervillain.
Former Daredevil showrunner Steven S. DeKnight is serving as showrunner for Jupiter's Legacy. He will also write and direct the first episode and produce. Lorenzo Di Bonaventura and Dan McDermott will exec produce.
Millar, the comic book writer known for creating Kingsman and penning Marvel Comics such as The Ultimates that helped inspire the Marvel Cinematic Universe, debuted Jupiter's Legacy in comics in 2013 with artist Frank Quitely.
Netflix acquired Millar's comic book imprint Millarworld in August 2017. The streamer previously ordered to series American Jesus, and is also developing films based on the titles Empress, Huck and Reborn, starring Sandra Bullock.
Netflix building out a roster of comic book series and films based on Millarworld properties comes as Disney prepares to launch Disney+, a streaming service that will feature Marvel Studios TV series. Netflix has begun pairing down its own Marvel shows, canceling Iron Fist, Luke Cage and Daredevil. Marvel competitor DC has already launched its own SVOD service, DC Universe.
