Kat Dennings Comedy 'Dollface' Nabs Hulu Series Order
Hulu is officially in the Kat Dennings business.
A year after ordering a comedy starring the 2 Broke Girls grad, the streamer has handed out a 10-episode series order to the project from executive producer Margot Robbie.
Dollface, which will begin production in 2019, follows a young woman (Dennings) who, after being dumped by her longtime boyfriend, must deal with her own imagination in order to literally and metaphorically re-enter the world of women and rekindle the female friendships she left behind.
Dennings, who was one of the most in-demand actresses this past pilot season, will also exec produce the comedy alongside writer-creator Jordan Weiss (People of Earth) and showrunner Ira Ungerleider (Angie Tribeca, Friends). Exec producers include Robbie and her LuckyChap banner's Brett Hedblom and Tom Ackerley; Clubhouse Pictures' Bryan Unkeless and Scott Morgan; Nicole King; and Stephanie Laing. Matt Spicer will also exec produce and direct the pilot. The series hails from ABC Signature Studios, the cable-focused arm of the Disney-owned studio.
"Reading Jordan’s script was like opening a window into my own brain," Dennings said Friday in a statement. “I’m so inspired by the stellar team we have around us and the unique world of this show, especially with Matt Spicer at the helm.”
Dollface joins a Hulu scripted comedy roster that also includes Sarah Silverman's I Love You, America and the upcoming Ramy, Shrill and Mindy Kaling's Four Weddings and a Funeral anthology. The news comes hours after Hulu picked up the live-action/animated hybrid comedy Woke to pilot.
"Jordan is an exciting, new voice that has something specific and provocative to say about her generation," said Hulu senior vp content Craig Erwich. "As we seek out fresh perspectives and new, thought-provoking projects, Dollface is exactly the type of relatable, yet distinct, series we know our audience will love. We can't wait to work with Jordan and Kat, as well as our partners at ABC Signature Studios, LuckyChap Entertainment and Clubhouse Pictures, to bring this series to life."
All told, Dollface is Hulu's third series with ABC Signature Studios, joining Reese Witherspoon and Kerry Washington's Little Fires Everywhere as well as the Marvel drama Runaways.
For her part, Dennings was among the most sought-after actresses this past pilot season, which saw her land the lead role in the ABC comedy How May We Hate You. Despite the casting, the network passed on the single-camera workplace comedy in May. Dennings spent six seasons starring on CBS' 2 Broke Girls and counts feature roles in Thor, Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist and The 40-Year-Old Virgin. She is repped by UTA, Management 360 and Harris Hartman.
