Kathy Griffin - P 2014

A version of this story first appeared in the Oct. 17 issue of The Hollywood Reporter magazine.

All eyes are on Kathy Griffin to see if she’ll snag Joan Rivers chair on Fashion Police when the E! show returns in January. So does she want to do it?

Griffin told The Hollywood Reporter that she has had conversations with the network, though nothing formal. “I want to do a great job if I do it, obviously,” she said Oct. 5 at L.A.’s Orpheum Theatre, where she headlined the Aid for AIDS fundraiser Best in Drag Show. “I can tell you that I hope they continue the tradition of my good friend and have someone lead the show with a fearless brand of comedy.”

She added that she admired Rivers' work and what she was able to create with the show. "People watched the show for Joan, and what she brought was so unique. We had many, many conversations about how when you are a female stand-up, you have more [creative] license," she said, adding that Rivers made the most of that freedom. "I love fashion, but it's a topic you have to make fun of."

No jokes about Griffin’s outfit: She looked fab in a sparkly Michael Kors, Giuseppe Zanotti shoes and extensions she described as her "magic hair." She was joined at the 12th annual event by celebrity judges including Melanie Griffith, Mary-Louise Parker, Holland Taylor, Mark-Paul Gosselaar, Josh Henderson, Dot Jones and Kathy Kinney.

The rousing fundraiser, co-founded and hosted by Patrick Rush, tallied more than $450,000 for Aid for AIDS thanks to a capacity crowd and generous donations from the judges and the audience. Miss New York Po Mi Saki (aka Nicholas Mancini) took home the crown.
