Lin-Manuel Miranda and Jimmy Fallon Perform Christmas Parodies of 2018 Hit Songs
Lin-Manuel Miranda and Jimmy Fallon took some of 2018's biggest hits and gave them holiday twists on Monday's episode of The Tonight Show.
"Are you saying that we should sing a medley of popular songs from 2018, but change the lyrics to make them about the holiday season?" asked Fallon. When Miranda agreed, the host grabbed a microphone and the two made their way to the open space on the stage.
Camila Cabello's "Havana" began to play as they danced. "Mall Santa, ho ho ho. His breath is reeking like Jack Daniel's, ho ho ho. Holding a beer and a Mylanta, ho ho ho," they sang.
"Oh, there's a line to see mall Santa," sang Manuel. Fallon picked up, "He's passed out in Panera." The parody concluded as the two sang, "Mall Santa, oh hell no."
The duo next took on Maroon 5's "Girls Like You." Fallon sang, "Too much food, scarfed down the full turkey and a whole fruitcake, too. Feels like I'm gonna spew, yeah, yeah."
Migos' "Stir Fry" also received a holiday-inspired parody. Instead of rapping the original lyrics, "In the kitchen, wrist twistin' like it's stir fry," they rapped, "In the kitchen, sip sippin' on the eggnog."
"This year I got a gift card to Dunkin'. It said that I had 20 bucks, but it had 3," sang Fallon to the tune of the Shawn Mendes hit "In My Blood." Miranda joined Fallon as they sang, "My Secret Santa sucks."
Post Malone's "Better Now" was the next song to get a Christmas parody. "My grandma gave me a new sweater now, sweater now," began Miranda. Fallon continued, "It's a turtleneck and it's green and brown, green and brown."
Miranda and Fallon also got into the Hanukkah spirit as they sang about spinning a dreidel to the beat of Zedd, Grey and Maren Morris' hit "The Middle."
"Right now I'm getting drunk of wine. It's Christmas shopping on Amazon. Oh what the hell did I buy?" said Fallon along to the tune of "No Tears Left to Cry" by Ariana Grande.
Miranda slowed down to sing a parody of Ed Sheeran's "Perfect" about receiving a Christmas card. During the song, he pleaded for the sender to put the 20 pages of information on Facebook instead of sending it in card form.
Fallon then made his way to a fireplace to sing a parody of Bebe Rexha and Florida Georgia Line's "Meant to Be" about the Elf on the Shelf. "Baby, lay on back and relax. There's a little elf hiding in the back," he sang in an alto tone. Miranda added, "Pay attention to how you act. Elf on the Shelf is watching that."
Cardi B's "I Like It" was the final song to get a Christmas twist. "Now I like giving, I like shopping. I like stuffing all my stockings," began Miranda. Fallon continued, "I like singing Christmas carols. Where's the door? Bitch, I'm knocking."
The two made their way into the audience as they sang the chorus: "Can't believe it's Christmas Day. I said I like it like that," they sang as confetti fell from the ceiling and they continued to dance.
Later during the appearance, Miranda and Fallon spoke about the Mary Poppins Returns star's highlights from 2018. The host listed off Miranda's many accomplishments, including winning a Grammy, getting a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and earning a Golden Globe nomination.
"You're forgetting the most important thing I did this year," said Miranda before he shared that the "highlight" of the year was his and Fallon's "Two Goats in a Boat" video.
In June, the two collaborated on a video posted on Fallon's Instagram page that began with the host shaving his beard into a goatee. After he wished that he had someone to share the moment with, Miranda appeared and the two rode in canoes as they sang about a number of things that could go in their boats.
"Here's what happened. I was on vacation. I was near Jimmy and I got a text that said, 'Do you want to sing Two Goats on a Boat?' I'll shave my face to make a goatee," recalled Miranda about how the video came to be. "I thought it was like a song that already existed and I said, 'I don’t know what you're saying, but yes.'"
Fallon shared that he had taken a screenshot of their text conversation. "I said, 'Maybe we should double kayak tomorrow for a fun Instagram. I want to shave a goatee to be like you and we'll sing Two Goats in a Boat' and you said, 'WTF is 2 goats in a boat? I mean, I'm in,'" read Fallon.
"Our poor, amazing wives filmed that," added Miranda.
The host explained, "They were the directors of that video and they had to sit there and be like, 'Are you kidding me?'"
After they shared the video, Fallon said that tourists were shocked to see the two doing choreographed dance moves in the boats. "Very strange day in Long Island," concluded Miranda.
