ABC's latest pilot orders reflect a slight departure from its robust catalog of family comedies, with single-camera sitcoms eying less traditional parenting.

J.J. Philbin and Liz Meriwether's Single Parents is first up. The 20th Century Fox TV production, also executive produced by their longtime New Girl collaborator Katherine Pope, follows a group of dysfunctional single parents as they lean on one another in raising their kids and looking for love.

Both Philbin and Meriwether share creator credit, but Philbin is listed as the lone writer on the script. (This is Meriwether's second order of pilot season, following on Fox's Daddy Issues.)

The network's other comedy order, its sixth total this pilot season that includes one straight-to-series, is Kristin Newman's Steps. The project — which, as the title implies, focuses on step parenting — is based on the Swedish format Bonus Family and comes from ABC Studios.

Newman, who's written for The Real O'Neals and Chuck, is shepherding the project, which is described as "four adults in three houses raise three kids after two divorces together." Executive producers include Mandeville TV's David Hoberman, Todd Lieberman and Laurie Zaks.
