'Locke & Key' Gets Early Season 3 Renewal at Netflix
Netflix is extending the life of Locke & Key — and also strengthening its relationship with one of the show's executive producers.
The streamer has renewed Locke & Key for a third season well before season two is set to debut. Production on the second season is wrapping this week in Toronto, and work on season three will begin in January.
Additionally, Netflix has signed co-showrunner Meredith Averill to an overall deal, covering TV and other projects. She runs the series with Carlton Cuse (who has his own overall deal with Disney's ABC Signature).
"Carlton and Meredith have built an incredible world in Locke & Key, and we're excited to have the Lockes return for more in the third season," said Brian Wright, vp overall deals for Netflix. "I'm delighted to expand our creative partnership with Meredith Averill, a talented creator with a keen eye for best-in-class horror and supernatural storytelling."
Averill's credits also include The Haunting of Hill House, Jane the Virgin and The Good Wife. She developed Locke & Key with Cuse and Aron Eli Coleite (who was co-showrunner at a previous incarnation of the show at Hulu).
"I'm incredibly grateful to have found a home at Netflix where I feel constantly supported, challenged and inspired," said Averill. "I look forward to continuing and expanding our relationship."
Added Cuse, "We have some incredible adventures in store for the Locke family in season 3, and could not be more excited to continue telling our story with our great partners at Netflix."
Locke & Key took a long and winding path to Netflix. The first iteration of a series based on Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodriguez's graphic novel was developed at Fox back in 2010 (after initially being optioned for a feature treatment by Dimension Films). The network passed, and it then went back to feature film development, this time at Universal. That didn't come together either, so the comic's publisher, IDW, and Hill returned to adapting the source material for TV and landed a pilot order at Hulu — at which point Cuse and Coleite came on board as co-showrunners.
After Hulu opted not to go forward, Netflix gave Locke & Key a straight-to-series order in July 2018. The first season debuted in February, and the streamer picked up a second in late March.
Cuse and Averill executive produce the series with Kevin Lafferty, Joe Hill, Ted Adams, Chris Ryall and Lydia Antonini for IDW and Andy Muschietti, Barbara Muschietti, David Alpert and Rick Jacobs for Circle of Confusion.
