Hulu's 'The Looming Tower' Finds Lead in 'Last Panthers' Grad
Hulu's 9/11 drama has found its lead.
Tahar Rahim (The Last Panthers) is set to star in the streamer's adaptation of The Looming Tower, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.
Based on Lawrence Wright's Pulitzer Prize-winning nonfiction book, the series traces the rising threat of Osama bin Laden and al-Qaeda, taking a controversial look at how the rivalry between the CIA and FBI may have inadvertently set the stage for the tragedy of 9/11 and the war in Iraq.
Rahim will play Ali Soufan, a young FBI agent on John O’Neill’s I-49 anti-terrorism squad who quickly ascends to the role of O’Neill’s protege, due to his brilliance, his fluency in Arabic and his knowledge of Islam. Ali is outraged by the perversion of his religion by enemies of the United States and uses every tool at his disposal, including going undercover in extremists’ gathering spaces, in order to prevent catastrophes.
Rahim marks the first casting for the project, which has been picked up for a 10-episode season. Dan Futterman (Foxcatcher) penned the adaptation and will executive produce with Alex Gibney (Going Clear) and Wright. The drama hails from Legendary Television.
In addition to the historical mini The Last Panthers, Rahim's credits include The Eagle and Garth Davis' upcoming Mary Magdalene. He is repped by UTA.
After an ambitious 2016, which saw the launches of 11.22.63, The Path, Chance and Shut Eye, Hulu is preparing for another big year with original dramas The Handmaid's Tale, Harlots and anthology series Dimension 404, as well as the Seth Rogen sci-fi series Future Man.
