M. Night Shyamalan Psychological Thriller Scores Apple Series Pickup

Apple's scripted spending spree continues.

In a competitive situation with multiple outlets pursuing the project, the tech giant has landed an untitled psychological thriller from M. Night Shyamalan. The half-hour project has scored a 10-episode, straight-to-series order.

Shyamalan will executive produce the series, whose premise and logline are being kept under wraps. The project is created and written by BAFTA-nominated Tony Basgallop (EastEnders, Hotel Babylon, 24: Live Another Day, Outcast). Basgallop and Shyamalan will executive produce, with the latter set to direct the premiere.

The half-hour thriller is being produced by Shyamalan's Blinding Edge Pictures, with Ashwin Rajan (Split, Wayward Pines) exec producing alongside Escape Artists' Jason Blumenthal (The Equalizer), Oscar-nominated Todd Black (The Magnificent Seven) and Oscar winner Steve Tisch (Forrest Gump). Taylor Lathan will co-exec produce.

The Apple show marks Shyamalan's latest TV foray following Fox's summer thriller Wayward Pines, which will not return for a third season after trouble casting a new lead for the anthology-like drama. Shyamalan (Unbreakable, Split, the upcoming Glass) also has been working on a two-hour Tales From the Crypt horror block for Turner-owned TNT. The status of that project, first announced in January 2016, remains unclear.

The Shyamalan project joins a rapidly expanding slate of scripted series at Apple under video heads Zack Van Amburg and Jamie Erlicht and their growing development team. The company's slate includes the Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon morning news drama; a mystery series from La La Land's Damien Chazelle; Steven Spielberg's Amazing Stories anthology (which is looking for a new showrunner after Bryan Fuller's exit); Octavia Spencer's Are You Sleeping (in development); a comedy starring Kristin Wiig; a space drama from Battlestar Galactica's Ron Moore; Steven Knight's world-building See; and unscripted docuseries Home.

Shyamalan is repped by WME and Bloom Hergott; Basgallop is with Independent Talent Group in the U.K., UTA and attorney Bruce Gellman.
