FX is sticking with Mayans MC — if not co-creator Kurt Sutter.

The Disney-owned cable network has renewed the Sons of Anarchy spinoff for a third season. The pickup comes a day before the series airs its second-season finale.

It also comes about three weeks after FX fired Sutter for being, in his words, an "abrasive dick" on the set of the drama. Sources told The Hollywood Reporter there were multiple complaints about his behavior on set. Co-creator Elgin James will take over as showrunner for season three, which is slated for fall 2020.

"We’re happy to continue telling the story of Mayans MC with our partners at Fox 21 and excited that Elgin James has earned the opportunity to become the series’ showrunner,” Nick Grad, president original programming at FX, said Monday in a statement. "Kurt Sutter identified and chose Elgin as his partner on the show from the outset, and Elgin has been instrumental to the success of the series, leveraging his experience and creative vision to make Mayans MC with this incredible cast, crew and creative team."

Added Fox 21 TV Studios president Bert Salke, "Keeping this vibrant series strong is a huge priority to everyone at Fox 21 Television Studios, FX Productions and of course FX, which has been a spectacular home and platform for both Mayans M.C. and Sons before it."

Sutter wrote in a letter to the show's cast and crew that he had stepped back from day-to-day operations on Mayans this season but the effort went counter to plan: "As you know, I’ve removed myself quite a bit this season, allowing others to take a bigger role in producing the show. It appears that philosophy has backfired. It’s been reported by writers, producers, cast and crew that my absence and subsequent behavior when there, has only created confusion, chaos, hostility and is perceived as abandonment. Or at least that’s how Disney has interpreted it. I’m sure it’s true.

"This morning I was fired by Dana Walden and John Landgraf for all the complaints levied against me. Not the way I wanted to end my 18 year relationship with FX. At least being fired for being an abrasive dick is on brand."

Mayans MC's current season is averaging 4.6 million viewers per episode across all platforms. The show ranks sixth among 172 cable scripted series in 2019 among adults 18-49 in Nielsen's live-plus-7 ratings and in the top 10 in other key demographics.

Mayans MC is part of a roster of FX originals that also includes American Horror Story, Atlanta, Better Things, Fargo, American Crime Story, Mr Inbetween, Pose, Snowfall and What We Do in the Shadows.
