'Mr. Mercedes' Renewed for Season 2 at Audience Network

The sophomore run will be adapted from Stephen King's acclaimed trilogy.

AT&T's Audience Network is bringing Mr. Mercedes back for another round.

The David E. Kelley drama has been renewed for a second round of 10 episodes set to resume production in February for a premiere in late 2018. The renewal comes ahead of Wednesday's season one finale.

Kelley (Big Little Lies) and Jack Bender, who directed, are set to return. Stephen King, Kelley, Bender and Dennis Lehane executive produce, with the latter also contributing writing to the drama from Sonar Entertainment.

Season two will be based on King's Bill Hodges Trilogy, which includes Mr. Mercedes, Finders Keepers and End of Watch. Harry Treadaway starred in season one as killer Brady Hartsfield, who taunts a retired police detective played by Brendan Gleeson.

"The master plan, which of course is always subject to change, is each book would represent a whole season, and Mr. Mercedes is the first season. Then we'll turn to season two and the second book," Kelley told THR in August. Although there are only three books in the Mercedes book series, Kelley also said he would be open to going beyond a potential third season. "Going into this, the idea is that we have three books and in success it would make for three seasons and then, who knows? Maybe longer if we're having fun."

For Audience Network, Mr. Mercedes joins fellow scripted drama Condor and comedies Hit the Road, Loudermilk and You Me Her. Audience Network's best-known drama Kingdom recently wrapped its run.
