Bill Nye is headed for a new frontier: Netflix.

The streaming giant has ordered a new talk show headlined by Nye, it was announced Wednesday.

BIll Nye Saves the World will explore science and its impact on politics, society and pop culture. Each episode will tackle a different topic from a scientific point of view, dispelling myths and refuting anti-scientific claims that may be espoused by politicians, religious leaders or titans of industry. Nye also will bring in special guests, conduct experiments and, ultimately, let the facts make the case. The series is slated to debut in spring 2017.

Netflix and Bunim/Murray Productions will produce the series, with Gil Goldschein and Julie Pizzi set to exec produce with Michael Naidus (The Late Late Show With Craig Ferguson), who will serve as showrunner. Writer and stand-up comedian Mike Drucker has been tapped as head writer, with astronomer, author and award-winning science communicator Phil Plait set as head science writer.

BIll Nye Saves the World marks Nye's first television show in nearly two decades. Bill Nye the Science Guy ran on PBS and in syndication from 1993 to 1998, producing 100 half-hour episodes. The series went onto win 19 Emmys and make the scientist and mechanical engineer a household name. His other TV appearances include a stint on the kids' show Back to the Future: The Animated Series — during live-action educational segments — and Dancing With the Stars, on which he competed in 2013.

“Since the start of the Science Guy show, I’ve been on a mission to change the world by getting people everywhere excited about the fundamental ideas in science,” Nye said in a statement. “Today, I’m excited to be working with Netflix on a new show, where we’ll discuss the complex scientific issues facing us today, with episodes on vaccinations, genetically modified foods and climate change. With the right science and good writing, we’ll do our best to enlighten and entertain our audience. And, perhaps we’ll change the world a little.”

Although Netflix has been ambitious in expanding its slate of original series in recent years, Bill Nye Saves the World marks only the second talk show on the streaming giant, joining the recently renewed Chelsea.

Nye is repped by UTA.
