Netflix Renews First Spanish-Language Original 'Club de Cuervos' (Exclusive)
Nearly two months after it premiered, Netflix has renewed Club de Cuervos for a second season.
The soccer dramedy starring Luis Gerardo Mendez centers on a feud between heirs of a professional soccer club after the team's owner dies and marks the streaming service's first Spanish-language original series.
From Gaz Alazraki, Mike Lam and Leonardo Zimbron, the creators of the Mexican box-office hit Nosotros los Nobles (The Noble Family), Mendez will now be credited as an executive producer in season two.
A return date for the series has not yet been determined but it will start shooting early next year in Mexico for a 2016 debut.
Club de Cuervos has helped the streaming service establish itself in new markets — particularly Mexico. Further working in Club's favor is that 25 percent of the show's viewers are U.S. subscribers.
Sources say the streaming service has also upped the show's production budgets as it looks to capitalize on Mendez's popularity as arguably Mexico's biggest box office draw. The actor starred in Nosotros Los Nobles, which grossed more than $28 million to become Mexico’s second-most successful film of all time. (He's also the face of Pepsi and AT&T in Mexico.) For his part, Mendez recently wrapped his English-language debut in Netflix's original feature Rebirth as the streamer looks for other opportunities for the actor.
Mendez is repped by Paradigm, Mosaic and Talent on the Road Management.
