New Girl is getting a proper goodbye.

Fox has renewed the Zooey Deschanel-led comedy for a seventh and final season. While an official episode count has yet to be determined, sources say the final season will be a shorter run.

New Girl ended its sixth season in April on an ambiguous note, with a finale written to serve as both a season and potential series ender. That's how uncertain Fox brass were about its renewal prospects. But even though the bloom was off the rose of the Deschanel starrer, it has been a steady draw — even in its sixth season.

Excluding Sunday night animation and freshman The Mick, New Girl actually closes out the 2016-17 season as Fox's highest-rated returning half-hour. Its average 1.6 rating among adults 18-49 and 3.1 million viewers is a welcome start to Tuesday nights, when so many other originals on the network have been cratering.

The decision to end the single-camera comedy with season seven comes as no surprise, as creator Liz Meriwether has been vocal about starting a new chapter. Meanwhile, she has Fox pilot Thin Ice currently in consideration, though it appears unlikely to move forward at this time. As for the cast, they will have no shortage of other opportunities once New Girl ends its run.

The decision to give New Girl a final farewell is also logical given that Meriwether continues to be a valued producer and the network owns the show via studio counterpart 20th Century Fox. Fox, like NBC, has increasingly focused on owning its programming, with all six of its new show pickups for the 2017-18 season coming from 20th TV.
