New Girl wraps its fourth season on Tuesday night. And while the Fox comedy is formally bidding adieu to star Damon Wayans Jr. in the episode, there might be an even bigger development.

"Clean Break" revisits the long-dormant relationship between Schmidt (Max Greenfield) and Cece (Hannah Simone), and the behind-the-scenes video below finds showrunners Liz Meriwether, Brett Baer and Dave Finkel speaking rather optimistically about their romantic prospects. "Very early on, we knew we wanted to get Schmidt and Cece together," says Baer. "And if they do get together, they're getting together forever."

Though the episode also turns an eye back to the pairing of Nick (Jake Johnson) and Jess (Zooey Deschanel), as some spring cleaning prompts nostalgia for their seasonlong relationship, the focus (for now) seems to be on Schmidt and Cece.

"I've loved them since the pilot," declares Meriwether. "It's kind of the ultimate underdog story."
