Nick Offerman, Mary-Louise Parker Board Colin Kaepernick Series at Netflix
Netflix's limited series about the life of Colin Kaepernick has cast the NFL quarterback and activist's adopted parents.
Mary-Louise Parker and Nick Offerman will star with the previously cast Jaden Michael in Colin in Black and White, a six-episode series created by Kaepernick and AvaDuVernay. Parker (Weeds, Mr. Mercedes) and Offerman (Parks and Recreation, Devs) will play Teresa and Rick Kaepernick, Colin's adoptive parents.
Michael, meanwhile, will play Colin as a high schooler. The series will examine Kaepernick's upbringing as a Black teenager in a white adopted family (and predominantly white community) while becoming a star quarterback and laying the groundwork for his present-day activism. Kaepernick will serve as the show's narrator.
Kaepernick made headlines in 2016 when, during his time playing for the San Francisco 49ers, he began kneeling during the playing of the national anthem as a protest against racial injustice and police brutality. His actions eventually became a political issue during that year's presidential campaign; Donald Trump urged NFL owners to cut players who protested during the anthem.
He hasn't played in the league since 2016 and in 2017 filed a grievance against the NFL and team owners alleging they had blackballed him. The two sides reached a confidential settlement in 2019, and NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said over the summer he would "encourage" a team to sign the QB as a free agent.
Michael Starrbury, an Emmy nominee for Netflix's When They See Us (also from DuVernay), is writing Colin in Black and White and will executive produce with DuVernay and Kaepernick.
Parker earned a Tony Award nomination this year for her role in The Sound Inside. She's also attached to a Weeds sequel in development at Starz from Lionsgate TV, which also produced the original Showtime series. Other recent credits include Red Sparrow and ABC's When We Rise. She's repped by CAA and Untitled Entertainment.
Offerman is coming off FX on Hulu's Devs and reprised his role as Ron Swanson in NBC's Parks and Recreation special earlier this year. He also heads the voice cast of Fox's forthcoming animated series The Great North and co-hosts Making It on NBC with his Parks cohort Amy Poehler.
