Octavia Spencer to Star in Apple True Crime Podcast Drama From Reese Witherspoon

Apple is expanding its relationship with Reese Witherspoon.

The actress, already set to star in a morning news show series for the tech giant, is set to executive produce Are You Sleeping, a new series in development starring Oscar winner Octavia Spencer (The Help, Hidden Figures).

Based on Kathleen Barber's true crime novel, Are You Sleeping offers a glimpse into America's obsession with true crime podcasts. It challenges viewers to consider the consequences when the pursuit of justice is put on a public stage. Nichelle Tramble Spellman (The Good Wife, Justified) created the project and will pen the script. Witherspoon will exec produce alongside her Hello Sunshine partner Lauren Neustadter, with Chernin Entertainment's Peter Chernin, Jenno Topping and Kristen Campo overseeing for the recently launched Chernin/Endeavor Content banner. Spencer and Tramble will also exec produce. Sarah Koenig will serve as a consultant on the drama.

Are You Sleeping is the first development project to land at Apple, which previously commissioned three straight-to-series orders. Those are the two-season pickup for Witherspoon and Jennifer Aniston's untitled morning news show drama, Bryan Fuller's Amazing Stories anthology and a space drama from Battlestar Galactica and Outlander showrunner Ron Moore.

Spencer, repped by WME, is currently onscreen in Guillermo del Toro's The Shape of Water. Spellman, also with WME and Industry Entertainment, is working on HBO's controversial slavery drama Confederate with the Game of Thrones creators and her husband, writer Malcolm Spellman
