Oliver Hudson is returning to ABC.

The former Nashville star has signed on to star opposite Jenna Fischer in the network's comedy pilot Splitting Up Together, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.

Written by Suburgatory creator Emily Kapnek and based on the original Danish series, the half-hour centers on a couple, Lena and Martin, whose marriage is reignited by their divorce. They still live in the same house, alternating weeks, with one living upstairs and doing the parenting while the other lives downstairs in the guest apartment.

Hudson will play Martin, an athletic, easy-going kind of guy adjusting to his suddenly divorced life with hopeful optimism. However, as a newly single parent, he can't help but wonder — during unfamiliar moments of freedom — what went wrong in his marriage. The actor's casting comes one day after Fischer signed on to play Lena.

For Hudson, the role brings him back to the network where he previously co-starred on seasons two and three of Nashville before his character was killed off early in season four. He most recently co-starred on season one of Scream Queens. The actor, whose other credits include Rules of Engagement and Dawson's Creek, is repped by ICM, Management 360 and Ziffren Brittenham.

Kapnek will also executive produce the comedy with Ellen DeGeneres, Jeff Kleeman, Mie Andreasen, Hella Joof and original series creator Mette Heeno. Dean Holland will direct the pilot. DeGeneres' A Very Good Production and Kapnek's Piece of Pie Productions will produce in association with Warner Bros. TV.
