'Ordinary Joe' Picked Up to Series at NBC

Ordinary Joe Main

Ordinary Joe is moving forward at NBC.

Following a nearly 15-year development process, the Matt Reeves-produced drama starring James Wolk has been ordered to series at NBC. Ordinary Joe, based on the British concept that Reeves originally developed for ABC in 2006, marks NBC's second drama series pickup for the 2021-22 broadcast season and joins La Brea at the network.

Ordinary Joe explores the three parallel lives of the show’s main character (played by Watchmen's Wolk) after he makes a pivotal choice at a crossroads in his life. The series asks the question of how different life might look if you made your decision based on love, loyalty or passion. Natalie Martinez, Charlie Barnett and Elizabeth Lail co-star. An episode count has not yet been determined.

Russel Friend and Garrett Lerner (House, Smallville) penned the script and exec produces alongside Reeves, Adam Kassan, Rafi Crohn and Howard Klein. The series is a co-production between Disney's 20th Television and Universal Television, Reeves' 6th & Idaho banner, and 3 Arts.

"I still remember when Matt Reeves shared this passion project back when I worked at 20th. Russel and Garrett wrote such a compelling and emotional script that was expertly executed from page to screen,” said Lisa Katz, president of scripted content, entertainment and streaming at NBCU. "We love how Ordinary Joe lets us experience the universal question of 'what if' through an incredible cast of characters and engaging storylines."

Ordinary Joe was picked up to pilot more than a year ago and was among the doomed pilot class of 2020 that was not able to film before the pandemic shut down production across the globe. It was among the dramas that NBC elected to roll to this season after retaining the options on the cast. NBC filmed the pilot late last year when cameras began rolling again.

All told, Ordinary Joe is the third drama pilot to land a series order at NBCUniversal and joins NBC's La Brea and Langdon, with the latter moving to streamer Peacock. Ordinary Joe and La Brea join comedies American Auto and Grand Crew on NBC's 2021-22 broadcast schedule. (Limited series The Thing About Pam is also expected to bow sometime next season.)
