'The Righteous Gemstones' Renewed for Season 2 on HBO
HBO is giving The Righteous Gemstones more time to spread the word.
The premium cable network has picked up a second season of the Danny McBride-created comedy about a family of televangelists. The renewal comes four episodes into the show's first season, which has performed solidly thus far, and continues HBO's relationship with McBride and his Rough House Pictures partners Jody Hill and David Gordon Green.
"Danny, Jody and David are among our favorite collaborators, and we’re thrilled that their take on a family comedy has been met with such enthusiasm," Amy Gravitt, executive vp, HBO Programming, said Monday in a statement. "We cannot wait to share the next steps in the Gemstone family's epic journey. Hallelujah!"
McBride created the series and stars with John Goodman, Edi Patterson, Adam Devine, Walton Goggins, Cassidy Freeman, Tony Cavalero, Tim Baltz and Greg Alan Williams. Hill and Green executive produce with McBride and are directing.
The Righteous Gemstones is the third HBO series from the Rough House team, following Eastbound and Down and Vice Principals.
Through its first three episodes, the comedy is averaging 572,000 viewers for its initial airings, retaining nearly all of the audience from lead-in Succession. The series premiere drew 844,000 viewers, including replays and streaming, on its debut night, making it HBO's most-watched comedy series premiere since Vice Principals in 2016.
The Righteous Gemstones is part of an HBO comedy roster that also includes Barry, Curb Your Enthusiasm, High Maintenance, Insecure, Los Espookys, A Black Lady Sketch Show and Ballers, which is airing its final season.
