CBS' summer drama Salvation will be back.

The network has renewed the Alex Kurtzman-produced show for a second season, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.

The si-fi series will return in summer 2018 for a 13-episode sophomore run.

The hourlong effort, which premiered in July, centers on an MIT grad student and a tech superstar who both bring a Pentagon official a staggering discovery — that an asteroid is just months away from colliding with Earth. Now with the added threat of nuclear war on the horizon, the three must work together with the Secretary of Defense to find a way to divert the asteroid, stop war and save humanity before time runs out.

Santiago Cabrera, Jennifer Finnigan, Charlie Rowe, Jacqueline Byers, Rachel Drance and Ian Anthony Dale star in the drama, which wrapped its first season on Sept. 20.

Liz Kruger and Craig Shapiro serve as showrunners and exec produce with Kurtzman, his producing partner Heather Kadin, Stuart Gillard and Peter Lenkov. CBS Television Studios produces Salvation in association with Kurtzman's Secret Hideout.

CBS has yet to decide the fate of its other summer scripted series, the third-year entry Zoo, based on James Patterson's book of the same name. Salvation and Zoo were the network's lone scripted offerings this past summer as CBS, like many other broadcasters, turned its focus away from scripted and more towards unscripted originals. It found success with the latter in the form of the long-running hit Big Brother.

That presented a change in strategy for CBS, which in years prior had been keen to expand its summer scripted originals following the success of Under the Dome. However, that series did not make it to a fourth season, and other shows like BrainDead and American Gothic were axed after just one season. (Kruger and Shapiro worked on the Halle Berry space Extant, which was canceled in 2016 after two seasons.)

Salvation is one of Kurtzman's four CBS TV Studios series. He is also an executive producer on Hawaii Five-0 (along with Lenkov), Scorpion and CBS All Access' Star Trek: Discovery.
