ABC has given a formal pilot order to a drama project from Mr. Robot creator Sam Esmail.

Esmail will write and direct Acts of Crime, which is described as a unique spin on the crime procedural. The pilot order comes as no surprise, as it landed a production commitment when ABC put it into development in the fall.

Universal Studio Group's UCP, where Esmail is under an overall deal, and ABC Signature are producing the pilot. Esmail executive produces with his Esmail Corp. partner Chad Hamilton.

Should it go to series, Acts of Crime will be the first show for Esmail at a broadcast network. In addition to Mr. Robot, Esmail's TV credits include USA's Briarpatch and Amazon's Homecoming, as well as a forthcoming Battlestar Galactica reboot at NBCUniversal's streamer Peacock. He's also an executive producer of Peacock's limited series Angelyne, based on a story by The Hollywood Reporter's Gary Baum.

Acts of Crime is one of two projects Esmail Corp. set up at ABC in the fall. The other, an untitled drama set at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, received a put pilot commitment at the time.

Esmail's pilot is part of a drama development slate at ABC that also includes includes an L.A. Law sequel starring Blair Underwood; a primetime continuation of daytime soap All My Children; two projects from Lee Daniels, including a TV adaptation of Waiting to Exhale; and potential shows from Pose creator Steven Canals (In the End) and former Queen of the South showrunner Natalie Chaidez (Chicano).
