Sam Neill has joined CBS' The Dovekeepers.

The four-hour miniseries from executive producers Roma Downey and Mark Burnett is based on Alice Hoffman’s acclaimed historical novel about extraordinary women whose lives intersect in a fight for survival at the siege of Masada.

Neill has been cast as Josephus, the somewhat controversial first-century Jewish scholar and historian. In Dovekeepers, he is seen interviewing the few adult survivors of the Siege of Masada in order to record the events that took place prior to and during the siege. These interviews are the firsthand accounts included among the annals of history of the Jewish-Roman War.

He joins an ensemble that includes Cote de Pablo, Rachel Brosnahan, Kathryn Prescott and Diego Boneta. Filming began in Malta in September.

“We are delighted to have the incredibly talented Sam Neill, an actor whose breadth of experience will bring such depth and vision to the role of Josephus,” said Downey. “Sam is a wonderfully exciting choice to bring Josephus to life in this gripping story of Masada.”

Frank Siracusa, John Weber and Yves Simoneau executive produce alongside Downey and Burnett, with Simoneau directing. Ann Peacock is adapting the book. CBS TV Studios and LightWorkers Media, a division of United Artists Media Group, are behind the series.

Neill is repped by ICM Partners and the U.K.'s Curtis Brown Group. His TV credits include Merlin, Peaky Blinders, Alcatraz, The Tudors and Reilly: The Ace of Spies. Film credits include Jurassic Park, The Piano, The Horse Whisperer, Bicentennial Man, The Vow, Dirty Deeds and the upcoming The Daughter.

The Dovekeepers, the first project from CBS and CBS TV Studios' limited series and event programming unit, premieres on CBS in 2015.
