Samantha Bee Enlists Terry Crews for PSA Slamming Sexual Harassment Jokes
Samantha Bee enlisted help from Terry Crews during Wednesday night's Full Frontal to urge the public to take male sexual assault and abuse seriously amid the #MeToo movement.
After emphasizing that one out of 33 men have been victims of attempted or completed rape, Bee said, "Sexual assault of men is a real problem and not a joke, despite the way we tend to talk about it."
The TBS late-night host then premiered a mock PSA with Crews, where both called out people who joke about topics like "prison rape" and "boys being molested."
"You're not funny. They've never been funny," Bee says, as Crews adds, "You're a hack and everybody knows it."
"But here's the good news. Lots of things are funny that aren’t rape," Crew begins to explain, leaving Bee to suggest, "For example, spit takes!" Throughout their PSA, she and Crews then showcase other examples of appropriate jokes such as, Crews joking that he's "pregnant" and Bee spits water in his face. The pair also urge the pubic to "joke about off-brand merchandise" such as "Milk Dards."
"Something not funny is acting like high schoolers getting assaulted by teachers are lucky," Crews says, as he then explains that something funnier would be "two kids stacked in a trench coat to get into an inappropriate movie." Another more fun option? "A pie to the face that’s filled with bees," Crews said as he is then showing putting the bee-infested pie in the late-night host's face while quipping that the "stings are hilarious."
During the conclusion of their PSA, Crews further reiterates that "You don't need to do jokes about assault to be funny" before teasing the Full Frontal host with another pie infested with bees. "Bees! Like your name! Get it?", the actor yells as Bee is shown trying to run away from him.
The Brooklyn Nine-Nine star's appearance follows having his testimony to Capitol Hill about sexual assault in June. "I am an actor, author, former athlete, advocate and a survivor of a sexual assault," Crews said at the time. "Hollywood definitely has been a problem area, simply because so many people who view this as a dream. And what happens is, someone has power over these dreams ... you get tricked into thinking that this type of behavior is expected, that it’s part of the job, that this harassment, abuse, even rape, is part of your job description."
He went on to say, "I wanted these survivors to know that I believe them, I supported them and that this happened to me, too."
In the aftermath of Harvey Weinstein's downfall and the subsequent #MeToo and Time's Up movement, the actor has been outspoken about his own experience with sexual assault. Crews accused William Morris Endeavor's Adam Venit of groping his genitals at a party in 2016. Crews did file a criminal complaint against Venit, but the Los Angeles City Attorney’s office declined to prosecute due to the statute of limitations.
