'Shadowhunters' Renewed for Season 3 at Freeform
Freeform is keeping Shadowhunters around.
The former ABC Family has renewed the series adaptation of The Mortal Instruments for a third season. As the younger-skewing Disney-owned network did last year, the news was announced Friday via a Facebook Live with the cast.
While down considerably in its second season, the series remains a fan favorite and, like Freeform's Pretty Little Liars, a social media favorite. Its March 6 midseason finale drew only 640,000 total viewers. The second half of its sophomore season returns June 5.
The drama will now outlast the big-screen incarnation as the original The Mortal Instruments opened to lackluster box office returns and plans for the sequel were scrapped.
Shadowhunters was picked up straight to series and changed showrunners after season one. Former Smallville showrunners Todd Slavkin and Darren Swimmer replaced Ed Decter who developed the series for Freeform.
The drama is produced by Constantin Film. Based on the best-selling young adult fantasy book series by Cassandra Clare, Katherine McNamara stars as Clary Fray, a woman who finds out on her 18th birthday that she is not who she thinks she is, but rather comes from a long line of Shadowhunters — human-angel hybrids who hunt down demons. Dominic Sherwood, Alberto Rosende, Matthew Daddario, Emeraude Toubia, Isaiah Mustafa and Harry Shum Jr. star.
Shadowhunters joins a roster of originals at Freeform including Baby Daddy, The Fosters, Stitchers, Young and Hungry, Beyond, Famous in Love, Cloak and Dagger, Alone Together, The Bold Type, New Warriors and The Siren as its flagship Pretty Little Liars wraps up its final run.
