Showtime continues to add to its drama roster.

The premium cable network has handed out a series commitment for a legal thriller from The Good Wife creators Robert and Michelle King. While not a straight-to-series order, it means that if the project does not go forward, Showtime will have to pay a massive series penalty.

Your Honor will be written and executive produced by BAFTA winner Peter Moffat, whose BBC drama Criminal Justice inspired HBO's Emmy-nominated limited series The Night Of. The Kings will exec produce.

Your Honor is described as a legal thriller that rips through Chicago society. It follows the son of a respected judge who is involved in a hit-and-run, with both of them dragged into a high-stakes game of lies, deceit and impossible choices when it is revealed that the victim was the son of a crime boss.

The project hails from CBS Television Studios, where the Good Wife creators' King Size Productions banner is under an overall deal. Your Honor is based on the Israeli drama Kvodo, which is airing on the country's Yes TV and was created by Ron Ninio and Shlomo Mashiach and produced by Ram Landes. Liz Glotzer (who worked with the Kings on CBS All Access' Good Wife spinoff The Good Fight and CBS' since-canceled BrainDead) and Scripted World's Alon Aranya and Rob Golenberg (Hostages, Betrayal) also exec produce.

"Peter Moffat's extraordinary talent with complex characters, suspenseful plotting and moral shading make him the perfect writer for Your Honor,” Robert and Michelle King said Thursday in a joint statement. “His pitch held the room hostage, and we can't wait to watch him bring this mesmerizing, complicated story to life.”

Your Honor is the latest project the Kings have set up at Showtime. The married couple previously developed a female-led military drama called Girls With Guns for the premium cabler in 2012; the project did not move forward.

This marks the latest high-profile project to land at Showtime. The CBS Corp.-owned premium cable network went straight to series on The President Is Missing, a drama produced by former President Bill Clinton and based on his book with James Patterson; and Kiddinga comedy starring Jim Carrey. They join a slate that includes Homeland, Shameless, Billions, The Affair, Ray Donovan and I'm Dying Up Here, as well as the upcoming White Famous, SMILF, The ChiPatrick Melrose and Escape at Dannemora.

"When a pitch has you on the edge of your seat for 40 straight minutes, you know you’re hearing something special,” said Showtime programming president Gary Levine. “When the pitchers are as talented, experienced and acclaimed as Michelle King, Robert King and Peter Moffat, you buy it in the room and start planning for a fascinating new Showtime series.”

The Kings, who have season two of The Good Fight also coming up in 2018, are repped by Paradigm and Del Shaw; Moffat, who was credited as an exec producer on The Night Of, is with Paradigm, United Agents in the U.K. and Bob Bookman Management; and Glotzer is with Paradigm and Myman Abell.
