Simon Cowell, Diablo Cody, 'Glee' Co-Creator Team for Synchronized Swimming Fox Comedy
How's this for an interesting grouping: Fox is teaming with Simon Cowell, Diablo Cody and Glee co-creator Ian Brennan for a comedy about … synchronized swimming.
The untitled single-camera project has received a hefty put-pilot commitment from Fox.
Written by Brennan and Cody (Juno), the comedy centers on Marion Lolo, who has 26 synchronized swimming medals, one restraining order against her and zero friends.
Brennan and Cody will executive produce via the former's overall deal with 20th Century Fox Television; Cowell will exec produce via his Syco Entertainment banner alongside Adam Milano.
The series marks Cowell's return to Fox following American Idol and The X-Factor. He currently is set to return to NBC's summer hit America's Got Talent as a judge next year. Cowell is repped by WME and attorney Sam Fischer.
For Brennan, the project marks his latest collaboration with Fox following musical dramedy sensation Glee and ensures he remains in business with the network beyond Scream Queens. The horror-comedy anthology is currently in its second season and remains a cult hit and strong DVR player that makes up for its lackluster same-day returns. Brennan is repped by WME and attorney Amy Nickin.
Cody has been pushing more into TV development this season. She's also teaming with Greg Berlanti for Raised by Wolves, a comedy set up at ABC via Warner Bros. Television. Beyond creating Showtime's United States of Tara, Cody also co-created Tig Notaro's Amazon comedy One Mississippi. On the feature side, beyond Juno, she wrote Ricki and the Flash starring Meryl Streep. Cody is with WME, MXN Entertainment and Jeff Frankel.
The synchronized swimming project comes as Fox has found success with high-concept comedies like The Last Man on Earth and more recently Son of Zorn, though the latter has not been a breakout hit this season.
