Sleepy Hollow S02E05 Consoling Still - H 2014

Ichabod Crane lives.

Fox has renewed drama Sleepy Hollow for a fourth season, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.

The procedural wrapped its third run with one of the season's biggest reveals: the death of female lead Nicole Beharie's Abbie Mills. There is no word if season four will be its last.

While the drama has fallen considerably from its breakout freshman season (and creatively if you listen to critics), the series boasts a loyal audience and wrapped its most recent run with a 1.4 rating among adults 18-49 and 4.8 million total viewers with 57 percent and 75 percent, respectively, of its audience coming via DVR.

While renewal talks have been underway since before the early April finale, it's unclear how many of those viewers will stick with the drama as there has been considerable backlash to Beharie's departure.

Beharie had been a key part of Sleepy Hollow's success. Many attributed the show's first-season hit status to the chemistry between Beharie and lead Tom Mison. Sources told THR at the time that Beharie had been unhappy and was actively trying to exit the series for quite some time. The character, sources said, originally was supposed to be killed off during the midseason finale, but insiders are said to have gotten cold feet.

The fourth-season renewal for the 20th Century Fox Television drama about the legend of Ichabod Crane comes as the series has already begun turning a profit. What's more, Fox has a massive gap on its 2016-17 schedule as it is tasked with filling the void created by American Idol's cancellation. Mison, for his part, was said to be renegotiating his contract after having scored a reduced workload in season three, which was moved from Thursdays to the Friday graveyard. Exec producers include Alex Kurtzman, Roberto Orci, Len Wiseman, showrunner Clifton Campbell, Albert Kim, Russell Fine, Heather Kadin and Raven Metzner.

Sleepy Hollow joins a Fox drama roster for 2016-17 that also includes the final season of Bones, Empire, Gotham, Lucifer, Rosewood, Scream Queens and newly ordered hourlongs Prison Break, Shots Fired, Star, 24: Legacy, Pitch, APB, The Exorcist and Lethal Weapon.
