Snowpiercer will keep rolling.

TNT has renewed the drama for a third season, six days before its second season is scheduled to premiere. The WarnerMedia cable network also gave the show an early renewal for season two — more than a year before the show finally made it to air.

The first season of Snowpiercer, based on Bong Joon Ho's movie of the same title (which in turn is based on a French graphic novel), performed well for TNT. It averaged about 1.25 million viewers for first airings and significantly more than that once delayed viewing and streaming were accounted for.

The series is set aboard a nearly thousand-car train that holds the remnants of humanity after a man-made climate disaster creates a new ice age. The first season ended with a cliffhanger in which the existence of a second train that carries other passengers, including the presumed dead creator of Snowpiercer, the mysterious Mr. Wilford.

Daveed Diggs, Jennifer Connelly, Alison Wright,  Mickey Sumner and  Iddo Goldberg head the cast. Sean Bean and Rowan Blanchard join the series as regulars for the second season.

Snowpiercer took a very long road to its May 2020 premiere. It first went into development in 2015, with Josh Friedman adapting the source material. TNT ordered a pilot in late 2016 and ordered it to series in January 2018, then switched showrunners from Friedman to Orphan Black creator Graeme Manson.

WarnerMedia announced plans to move the show to TBS in May 2019, then reconsidered later in the year and put the show back on TNT, where it finally premiered May 31, 2020.

Manson executive produces with Marty Adelstein and Becky Clements of Tomorrow Studios, Matthew O’Connor, Ben Rosenblatt, Scott Derrickson (who directed the original pilot), Christoph Schrewe and the film's producers: Bong, Miky Lee, Tae-sung Jeong, Park Chan-wook, Lee Tae-hun, and Dooho Choi.
