FX is opening the book on the next chapter of Sons of Anarchy.

The cable network announced Friday that it has handed out a 10-episode series order to Mayans MC, Kurt Sutter's follow-up to FX's long-running biker drama. The series will premiere in 2018, either in late fall or the summer pegged to the 10th anniversary of the flagship.

The series pickup comes four years after Sons of Anarchy wrapped its seven-season run and brings Sutter back to the network after The Bastard Executioner.

For its part, Mayans MC hit a few speed bumps on its path to the small screen. First announced in August 2015, the spinoff following the recurring and pivotal players from Sons was picked up to pilot in December 2016. In July, news broke that the pilot was going to be completely reshot with several roles recast. Sutter stepped back as the pilot director and Norberto Barba was brought in to helm the new pilot.

Mayans MC is set in a post-Jax Teller world, where EZ Reyes (JD Pardo), fresh out of prison, is a prospect in the Mayan MC charter on the Cali/Mexico border. Now EZ must carve out his new outlaw identity in a town where he once was the golden boy who had the American dream within his grasp. Edward James Olmos, Sarah Bolger, Clayton Cardenas, Richard Cabral, Michael Irby, Raoul Trujillo, Antonio Jaramillo and Carla Baratta round out the cast.

Barba exec produces the series alongside Sutter. Elgin James, who co-wrote and co-created the drama with Sutter, co-exec produces the Fox 21 Television Studios and FX Productions co-pro.

"Kurt Sutter is a master storyteller and Mayans MC has the raw energy and intensity that are hallmarks of his signature style,” said FX president of original programming Nick Grad. “Thanks to Kurt, co-creator Elgin James and this amazing cast, Mayans MC builds on the legacy of Sons of Anarchy, taking it in a thrilling new direction that we can’t wait for the world to see."

Mayans MC joins a roster of FX originals that also includes the final season of The Americans, Atlanta, Baskets, American Crime Story, American Horror Story, Feud, Fargo, Snowfall, Legion and Trust, among others.
