'Sorry for Your Loss,' 'Sacred Lies' Among Facebook Watch Renewals
Sorry for Your Loss and Sacred Lies are getting second seasons on Facebook's Watch video platform.
The scripted half-hours are among a slate of renewals at the social media giant. Also getting second seasons are the unscripted series Huda Boss starring Huda Kattan and the Kerry Washington-produced mid-form drama series Five Points.
Series that debuted earlier in the lifespan of 16-month-old Watch — the unscripted series Ball in the Family and Returning the Favor — have already returned with new seasons. Meanwhile, the teen drama SKAM Austin was renewed in July. Queen America, the Catherine Zeta-Jones starrer that Facebook debuted in November, has yet to be picked up for another season.
"With our Originals, our aim is to give people programming that not only serves to entertain, but to also bring them closer together," Facebook head of global creative strategy Ricky Van Veen wrote Thursday in a blog post. "We've intentionally focused on content with the potential to have an extended life on Facebook beyond the initial airing of the shows, that sparks conversations and two-way interactions."
Although Watch is an ad-supported platform, Facebook has yet to provide viewership data that corresponds with how broadcast television shows are measured. Its public view counter also does not give clarity around whether viewers watch the duration of a video. The social network did, however, reveal Thursday that there are more than 400 people monthly and 75 million people daily who spend at least one minute on Watch. On average, those daily users spend more than 20 minutes on the video platform.
Watch's most-followed show is the Jada Pinkett Smith-hosted Red Table Talk, while the series with the most comments is the interactive game show Confetti. The shows with the most loyal fans, meaning the program with the highest percentage of viewers who have a 75 percent completion rate or higher on at least three episodes, is Sorry for Your Loss starring Elizabeth Olsen. The most-viewed Watch episode comes from Returning the Favor with Mike Rowe and currently has more than 41 million views.
Watch, which bowed in August 2017, launched internationally for mobile devices in August of this year. It is now also available globally via desktop browsers.
'We know that people have a range of video offerings available to them, but Watch is more than just library of videos — it's a place where people can follow video creators they care about, start conversations about videos with friends, and build communities of fans who share their interests," Facebook head of video Fidji Simo wrote on the Facebook blog. "With Facebook Watch, we set out to demonstrate what it looks like to build deep bonds through watching online video, instead of just having a passive viewing experience."
