Lifetime's 'Steel Magnolias' Trailer Offers Similar Script, Different Cast (Video)

Queen Latifah, Jill Scott, Phylicia Rashad and Alfre Woodard headline the network's remake of the 1989 film (and 1987 play).

Lifetime's much talked-about remake of Steel Magnolias, starring an all-black cast, has its first official trailer.

Queen Latifah, Jill Scott, Phylicia Rashad, Alfre Woodard and Condola Rashad fill the shoes of Sally Field, Dolly Parton, Olympia Dukakis, Shirley MacLaine and Julia Roberts, respectively. And much of the dialogue seems to be lifted directly from Robert Harling’s 1989 feature adaptation of his own 1987 play.

Also joining the party are contemporary updates like a Beyonce reference and a healthy dose of foreshadowing. (Most everyone has been spoiled to the tearjerker ending at this point.)

Steel Magnolias premieres on Lifetime later this year. Watch the full trailer below:
