Syfy has renewed its futuristic series The Expanse for a 13-episode second season set to air in early 2017.

The show, financed and produced by Alcon Television Group, is set 200 years in the future and follows the search for a missing woman that brings together a hardened detective (Thomas Jane) and a rogue ship's captain (Steven Strait). As they race across the universe, they uncover a massive conspiracy.

The Expanse, based on the New York Times best-selling book series of the same name, is currently in the middle of its 10-episode first season, airing Tuesdays at 10 p.m ET/PT. The series has had strong multiplatform viewership since it premiered earlier this month, with 4.5 million viewers sampling the first episode online and on demand ahead of the show's TV debut and an average of 1.6 million P2+ linear viewers in its first three episodes, according to Syfy.

"The Expanse is firing on all cylinders creatively, building a passionate fan base among viewers and critics alike and delivering on Syfy’s promise of smart, provocative science-fiction entertainment," Syfy and Chiller president Dave Howe said in a statement. "We can’t wait to see where the story takes us in season two."

The show also stars Shohreh Aghdashloo, Wes Chatham, Chad Coleman, Florence Faivre, Dominique Tipper and Cas Anvar.

The Expanse is executive produced by Oscar-nominated screenwriting duo Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby as well as Naren Shankar, who serves as showrunner with Fergus and Ostby. Alcon co-founders and co-CEOs Andrew Kosove and Broderick Johnson are also executive producers, along with former Alcon Television president Sharon Hall and the Sean Daniel Company's Sean Daniel and Jason Brown. Alcon Television executive Ben Roberts serves as co-producer. Ben Cook is a producer.

The Expanse is part of a massive Syfy push to bring more sci-fi fare to the network. The NBCUniversal-owned cabler has found success with its 12 Monkeys reboot and will next bow The Magicians, based on the beloved book series, this month.
